A Different Kind of Fairy Tale - Chapter 1

Were my parents really sitting at the kitchen table? It wasn't even my birthday yet, I don't understand what the hell is going on, but I'm honestly too scared to step in the kitchen to find out. I go back upstairs and to my room, closing the door so they don't realize that I'm still here. I slide my window open and throw my back to the grass, then I slide out the window, sliding my way down to the edge and step on the tree branch. I climb down the tree and run to the bus stop. I pray that they don't see me!

Reaching into my bag, I hope that I put my iPod in there, to drown out the snickering, pointing and jokes that were constantly aimed at me on the bus. I needed desperately to talk to Eli, but I'd have to wait till after school. I pulled out my phone and then realized I had left my iPod in the docking station. This is going to be a fantastic day...

The bus came a few long minutes later, squeaking to a stop in front of me. I stepped onto the bus and sat on the very front seat. Already I heard the comments about how I'm orphaned, that I'm fat, that I'm poor and, etc... I'm actually none of those. I weight 125 and I'm 5'7", and my parents send thousands of dollars in checks each month for Liz to help provide for me. They know nothing about me. 'Enough,' I told my mind once again. I get so carried away with my thoughts. I sat the rest of the bus ride in silence, blocking out the sounds of all the other kids on the bus.

As soon as the bus stopped, I jumped off and sped off to the main building. My locker was a couple of classrooms down, and I stopped to grab my first to periods of books and walked to my first class. I sat at the front and waited 10 minutes for the bell to ring. But before the bell could ring the announcements cackled and the secretary announced, "Emily Tate to the office please." As I headed out of class, kids everywhere stared at me. I was never called to the office or spoken too much around her, I was surprised. Some kids followed to the office to see if I were getting in any sort of trouble.

When I rounded the corner to the office I spotted Liz standing at the doorway, with my parents standing behind her, and the principal behind them. Liz approached me and said, "I'm sorry, they were going to take away my job and you know how much you mean to me. Just hear them out okay?" I nodded as best I could, as a lump formed in my throat. "Mom. Dad." I acknowledged. Most kids gasped around us until Principal Weavley ushered them to class. My parents nodded to me, then turned to Liz and said, "Please follow our directions, and we'll try to make this a smooth transition." My eyebrows furrowed. I was so lost, I had no idea what they were talking about. They turned back to me, with a slow smile. "Emily, you will no longer be enrolled in this school, you'll be coming with us and be given a private tutor. Also, you're moving, so Liz will take you back to the house so you can pack your necessities, while the rest will be shipped.

In four hours we will board a plane, and there will be someone there waiting to meet you. Please don't make this more difficult than it needs to be." I nodded and she gave me a small smile. So much for a nice welcome back. I'll have a fantastic 17th birthday at this rate. I don't even know where were going. Uhh... Why today! Of all days! Wait... What about Eli? What will I tell him? I'll call him later, during lunch, nobody will know it's me I'm sure. As my parents turned to exit the building, Liz and I followed. I concentrated on the floor as I walked, still noticing kids in the hallway, starring and whispering as I passed. Goodbye life I'll never miss.

Liz and I drove in a car that followed my parents. We got to the house and immediately swung my door open running through the front door and up to my room. I slammed the door shut and faced my room, sinking to the floor as the tears started to fall. "Sure, I wouldn't miss the people here, or my life, but I'd miss my room, house and especially Eli," I thought. "Speaking of Eli, I have to call him." Looking at the clock I realized it was now 10:00 am, he'll be on spare now. I picked up my phone and dialed #2 (which is Eli's speed dial number). He picked up on the first ring. "Hey," he said.

"Hey." I smiled at the sound of his voice.
"Why are you calling? Shouldn't you be in 2nd period Biology with Ms. Charms right now?"
"Yeah, about that, my parents came home, they followed me school and pulled me from the school."
"WHAT!? Why?"
"Apparently I'm moving, I don't know where, but I'm getting a private tour and Liz is coming with me."
"What about the house? What about you? Are you okay?"

"Yeah, Eli I'm fine. Promise. I'll text you when I know where I'm going okay? I'm sorry. I'll miss you."
He sighed on the end of the phone. I couldn't tell if this was a sigh of relief or a sigh of remorse.
"I'll miss you too! I love you," he said. Then the phone clicked and he hung up.
I dropped my phone, shocked by the 3 words I had just heard, from him, his mouth. I started to cry again, knowing that, that would be the last thing I would have heard from his mouth. I felt so bad, but I was kind of relieved for a fresh start, even if it was with the two worst parents of all time.

I started packing my clothes and the necessities I needed until they all arrived. Two hours later, I was done and being called downstairs. We were heading to the airport. I wonder who will be the person waiting at the airport...?
